One they keep referring to HE, so I guess only males are allowed to do this, but the part that bothers me the most is the part circled. Spouse, so guess Oklahoma thinks it is okay for a 15 year old to be married. As a father who youngest son is 16 I find this furious. Already bad enough age of consent in this state is 16. That’s right a 30 year old or even older can sleep with a 16 year old and it is legal in this state. Rant over thank you for listening.
I get you, and those were my first thoughts, but I think this is less predatory than that.
I think this is an exception that was written in for the benefit of much less stable children. It’s obviously not a desirable situation, but if a teenager gets pregnant and their parents kick them out, they are going to need health insurance, and they can’t do that if they aren’t legally old enough to sign for that. I see that it allows for other insurance at 16, which is when they may need car insurance in order to drive.
Some things to note. 3606 was first introduced in 1957 an age with vastly different cultural norms than ours in present day. Additionally that statute was amended as of May this year. Starting in November the process now requires parental agreement. Further it adds the
