Stepping back and looking at technology as inventions and the stuff they do and the ingenuity that goes into them, tech is dope. And even useless tech is fun as a toy.
But for Capitalism Reasons, whenever some new technology gets announced my first thought, by necessity, is “okay cool. How are they gonna use this to fuck us over and/or to kill people here in the global south”
Because the answer is not, has never been, and never will be “they won’t”. There is ALWAYS a knife under the pillow with capitalism.
I feel the same way as you do now, all the new tech is very interesting on a zoomed out scale, but for me personally, I don’t want anything new unless I can own it completely and (at least try to) repair it myself.
So I’d put myself on +8 🤣
It seems to me that you are blaming capitalism for a broader human phenomenon. After all, the conquistadors found and exploited the Americas due to improved ship building techniques long before the rise of the mercantile class. The aztecs slaughtered people in ritual sacrifice not for wealth, but for religion. Hell, smash-head-with-rock technology was invented in the stone age before “the means of production” even existed for someone to own them.
I have the utmost confidence in humanity’s ability to inflict terrible harm and injustices upon itself regardless of the economic system that happens to be in vogue at the time.
