One thing we must acknowledge to these idiots is how much effort they put on showing the world the consequences of extremely stupid acts so the rest don’t have to do it.

I work from office and i regularly use a vpn at work to connect remotely to devices that are not physically with me. Not to talk about companies that provide remote assistance and use them to connect to their customers devices.

Remote work is just a byproduct of vpns, but not the real reason why you use them at work.

How many small businesses can afford such permit? Hell, I’d argue that even bigger companies will have a problem paying for that.

Also, what if I just connect to a vps overseas and set my exit point there? Will they ban vps too? This is gonna be so much fun to see from the outside

Will the next step be banning VPS then? Because that’s what will happen: if you ban VPNs (good luck with that lol), people will just connect to a VPS in a less stupid country and exit from there.

A state-issued cert used pervasively across all interactions on the internet and uniquely tied to a particular individual?

If the cert only includes a single data, whioh is if the user is or not underage, without any identification other than that, i’m not sure what can you do with it. No name, no data of any kind… just a true/false statement indicating if the user (without a name or any other identification) has reached the legal age.

The first thing I thought when I heard about this facial recognition to verify age was now easy would be to trick the system with a game with photo mode. And for what I just read, it’s really that easy.

The fun thing is that, since they claim to not save the pictures, they can’t prove that you verified with a videogame… Unless they retire the claim, admit that they save the pictures and get in huge trouble with the data privacy laws.

Sigh… all this trouble to make an age verification system when the state could simply issue digital certs including simply your adult status (meaning you are not underage) that could be used in every website and that would not leak any personal data. And it would really work, as the authority issuing the cert is the state (which already knows your age) it could be automatically trusted on the internet and would keep your data safe.

While I love to see new launchers coming to deck and linux, I’ll have to pass on this one. I don’t see any reason to use it over heroic, and much less considering there is a sub to pay.

I could have considered it if it was a one payment solution, but I really don’t want to add another sub to another service to my life.

On a side note, I haven’t been present lately on lemmy so I didn’t read your latest posts (I’m now giving them a read) but I came across two new posts from you today after you said you were taking a pause in that weekly deck news posts from 3 weeks ago and I just wanted to say that I’m happy you are still writing.

This happens mainly for two reasons:

1. Dev pushed a shitty update/change and people are complaining
2. An “influencer” discovered something “bad” (generally meaning woke) about the game and it’s asking to review bomb it.

Looks at:

1. AAA games costing 100€+ between base game and season pass.

2. Online services on consoles constantly raising prices.

3. Consoles that, over the time cost more instead of less.

4. Wages frozen in time for years.

5. Rest of unrelated to videogames stuff but that drain people’s wages.

I’ve read about this. Yes, it’s truly notable how correlated both are.

One explanation I read that makes sense is that autistic people are generally less concerned about social definitions. Since we already are “weird” to the allistic society, we tend to consider things like gender in a different way:

“If society doesn’t have a way to explain how my mind works, how can it define my gender correctly? Maybe, its gender definition doesn’t apply to me”

So you start thinking that, indeed, maybe the society that can’t define your mind if not as “wrong”, can’t define your gender either. And turns out that you feel comfortable in something that, similar to how they explain your brain, is “weird” for them too.
