Well I do have faith in the youth, its just the elder capitalists that are looking to exploit them I’m worried about. I’m worried there will be a point when taking the time to actually learn how things work will put someone at a disadvantage under capitalism because those who are willing to “vibe code” their way into jobs will have the advantage of stuff that works “right now” instead of working “well”, and the people doing the hiring and running the companies are all about “right now”.
“The worst possible situation is to have a non-programmer vibe code a large project that they intend to maintain. This would be the equivalent of giving a credit card to a child without first explaining the concept of debt.”” Vibe Code is Legacy Code
The crash out from AI when all this debt starts to catch up is going to be so massive, not just in terms of market losses for the rich, but literal lost ability to think critically among possibly an entire generation of people depending on how long the grifting can keep going.
Feel free to create an account, the sign ups should be open. There’s also Jellyseerr if you have any requests to add.
I have a 500mbps fiber connection with my ISP, i could upgrade to 1gbps but i’ve not yet reached a point to warrant it. It’s about $50 a month.
If you can’t get that good of a connection at home, seedboxes, which can also have jellyfin installed, are pretty affordable.
Do you mean self-host on your own hardware and infrastructure? At home?
Ideally yes, or alternatively if you do need to depend on other people’s infrastructure, choose companies that aren’t massive multi-billion dollar operations that have zero concerns about you or keeping your business.
Hosting A basic website (with javascript) is a great place to start.
I mainly use docker for everything and you can get a simple http server docker point it at a folder containing your html files and now you have your own selfhosted website.
Use something like duckdns.org for a domain and dyndns to update the ip address to point to your home ip and have your router forward the http port, now your website can be accessed from outside the home network too.
Once you get a basic website working, its easy to keep going and try adding new services. I use dockge to manage all my docker services now but when i first got started i found dockstarter to be very easy to use, kind of like training wheels for docker until you feel comfortable enough to edit compose files directly.
I currently pay $8/month for a basic VPS which i use because i have a lot of public services but if you are just managing your own stuff or another user or 2 you dont even need that really.
For document storage id go with Nextcloud. If you want to also have dedicated music streaming i really like mStream for its simplicty but theres also a number of other services that support the subsonic protocol which has a lot of good clients to choose from for playback.
Id be happy to, what kind of services are you wanting to run and whats your home internet setup?
I can message here on lemmy but it might be easier if you want to contact me directly through chat, my contact info can be found here: https://gravitywell.xyz/#contact
Yeah thats what happens when you host your shit on some corporate “cloud”, but will they learn from this and move to self hosting, or will they just find some smaller provider who can do the same rug pull again.
So whats the objective here, to make it harder for lazy people to get jobs? Like Whats the end game with that?
ELP’s Karn Evil 9 is a pretty epic trilogy.
The first impression part 2 is what got played most often on the radio, but personally i think part 3 is where it shines.
And meta just pirated them directly from libgen, big fucking deal, copywright law needs to die.
im guessing based on how much of my own library anthropic tries to scan they probably also got a lot more content from the open web anyway and just destroyed the books to make a show of it and hope no one sues them after.
You dont need to unbind or destroy books to scan them and destroying them doesnt magically make reproducing bits or copies suddenly not plagerism.
Mainly i just host things to be the change i want to see in the world. Anyone with a decent internet connection can and should selfhost services that matter to them. I see the internet getting more commercial every day and lots of talk about how advertising is the only way to have “free” services online, but its really not. Its up to us to take back the internet from corporate interests.
What: Jellyfin, peertube, funkwhale, pleroma, matrix (continuwuity) and a Bunch of others. Mainly to share media and encorage more people to ditch netflix/spotify/etc.
Im currently working on setting up romm to also start sharing games.
Matrix is one of the only things i dont have open to new users because i dont want the moderation issues that come with it but it Lets me run bridges to all the other messaging services i dont want to have to use directly like i used to be able to do with IRC or Pidgin.
How: mostly just using docker on my home server, with a few things that dont need much storage on my VPS. I keep everything connected by wireguard.
I’ll continue to not ask for ID and run my own services open to anyone and everyone.
“we have briar at home”
No thanks.
I’m not saying there won’t be people who have interest in learning things for fun, I’m just thinking if it gets bad enough those sort of people will have a hard time competing with “vibe coders” for the same jobs. When the crash finally does come, those real developers will be in huge demand of course, but the question is how long will that take, and what kind of problems will we be creating up till then.
