Does anyone have a recommendation for another arcade 64 vs 64 FPS mp game on Linux?

Previously I used BF for that, but now that I’ve transitioned to Linux that is not available obviously.

you can still play BF3 and 4 with some work arounds. Liam (guy’s site that this article is from) posted the other week on his site how to get 3 and 4 working. nothing major at all just a couple extra steps to get it going which is no biggie if you’re on linux, you’re used to the extra steps.

Haven’t played it yet, but I’ve heard BattleBit Remastered is pretty good. I think it might even have 128 v 128 as an option.

Graphics and visual style much different though.

Battlebit is kinda dead after the devs started work on a sound update, failed to separate their prod and Dev source branches, and then realized they couldn’t make small changes without finishing the actually really big audio and everything else update first.

Also, battlebit is in a bit of a weird spot; it was made by the dev team as an arma/squad replacement for people without high tier setups, but was first published with more arcade elements than that initial start would have you expect it to have. There’s been a couple rumors that the devs aren’t happy with how arcadey the gameplay for it is.

It’s fun for what it is, but there’s not a whole lot of players on it lately, and future gameplay elements aren’t guaranteed.

The situation about the dev’s not happy with how arcadey the gameplay is surprises me.

I found the gameplay too high stakes, I felt like everywhere I went when I tried it I’d die instantly without any idea where the shots were coming from. Like Hell Let Loose or Firestorm with blocky art.

For me personally, it had some of the features of a milsim, like quicker deaths, squad chat, medics, etc, but lacked a lot of the team-oriented objectives that bring a team together, like larger maps, even quicker deaths, stamina management, resource management and spawns.

Essentially, it was a bit of a rough combination of arcade and milsim and didn’t quite fit the bill of either. If nearly every single gun takes 1-2 hits to kill someone, but spawns are setup so that they’re all within 100 yards of the other team, it really can get overwhelming incredibly quickly.

At least, that’s how it felt to me. If nobody is required to make spawn points since they just show up for the main objectives, nobody is going to bother to drive around and set it up better without being friends IRL, or actually just into that part of a milsim fps.

It feels a lot like BF2 back in the day but with a BF:BC2 and above style unlocking system. I’m surprised that was not the intention, and they want something more like Arma or Squad, when they clearly understand what used to make Battlefield so good since they replicated that and not ARMA or Squad.

Right?? Exactly my thought. When I started playing this I felt very much reminded of some of my fondest gaming memories.

There was a pivot from milsim to cod style gameplay after or around their first beta testing started. Apparently not enough people liked the milsim gameplay, so they switched to more arcade stuff instead. It was touted as a win for actually properly done user experience testing, and small development teams combining to allow for more agile direction adjustments. This where the ‘remastered’ title came in, despite being the first release they did.

If you think Hell Let Loose is realistic, then you haven’t gotten into the milsim side of things yet, and it’s great. Hell Let Loose wants to look realistic, but it plays like CoD.

It’s my understanding that their original goal was more like ArmA, or maybe Squad.

Squad even has imo the best Star Wars mod (Galactic Contention). just be aware it’s a much slower pace than battlefield/Cod and heavily depends on teamwork

Just be aware that it’s a lot less ‘first person shooter’ and more ‘strategy game from a first person perspective’ these days. I’m still so mad about their infantry combat overhaul.

Also, more importantly, squad is only sort-of compatible with linux. They’ve got DRM that does break things on the linux side on occasion since it’s not directly supported.

I’ve been playing Squad fairly frequently for a long time on Linux, usually without issue. Most game aren’t technically supported, but they work perfectly fine, as long as the devs don’t purposefully block it. With that said, I’m pretty sure OWI has said they actively support Linux now, with them recently adding support for Squad44 too.

(The current playtest this weekend for the next big update to UE5 won’t let me join servers though, and I’m pretty sure it’s an issue with Linux support.)

I also wouldn’t say it’s a strategy game in first person. Certainly that is a way some people will be playing, but most are playing an FPS, just much slower paced than most, and where you need to follow orders and work together to be effective.

Holdfast is a pretty awesome. Most servers are 150 players but I have seen some at 64 and 200 players. It has proximity chat and most players have mics which can be funny at times. I cannot recall a game where you can talk to the enemy during a game, usually it was only in the lobby.
