ilinamorato@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•Donald Trump's name in Jeffrey Epstein files redacted by FBI: report6·1 day agoThis is human behavior. Being selfish and tearing down everything you don’t understand, grabbing power with both hands and using it for your own enrichment, abusing and treating people as disposable, and lying to get more of all of it no matter who it hurts has been human behavior for a very long time. And following it because you think that you can use it, or that you can snap up the scraps that fall from the table, or just because you believe it? That’s human, too. It’s not good, but it’s something that the human race has always been capable of. We see all of both of these things in the oldest documents we have.
If it’s possible to ever grow beyond that as a species, we have to recognize it as a part of us so that we can fight it even when it’s not imminent; if it’s something outside of us, we only have to react to it when it wanders out of the woods. But it’s within us; we have to act before it rears its head and devours us.
ilinamorato@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•Donald Trump's name in Jeffrey Epstein files redacted by FBI: report12·1 day agoNo. Don’t flinch on this. A human is doing this, and a human can do it again. There are no consequences for a beast in the woods. We do not hold a bear accountable for his actions. As soon as we think it’s only monsters who are capable of monstrosity, we turn it into a simple matter of defending against a threat from without, but the danger is in our midst. A human is doing this, and we have to hold that human accountable.

This may be similar to “actual libertarianism,” but I wouldn’t know, not being a libertarian.

So that’s about 437,000 households, which isn’t nothing. If you put them all in one US city, it’d be bigger than Jacksonville, which would put it into the top 10 by population.
Still, it makes it easy to not be affected; just don’t live in Jacksonville.

Yes, it would be better for society as a whole, even if it could potentially be worse for an individual; but is it ethically right to burn up an individual for the sake of society? And now if you’ll excuse me, I have to walk away from Omelas.
Edit: Pre-empting a question: Yes, I walk. I recognize that the trolley would be quicker.

He might literally be the worst man in show business. Both in terms of human decency and business acumen.

I really hope you do soon. Hey, look at it this way, you’ve met one now!
ilinamorato@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•House Ethics report finds AOC ‘impermissibly accepted gifts’ related to 2021 Met Gala appearance | CNN Politics1·6 days agoAOC…
“proactively took steps to comply” with House rules, including using personal funds to rent apparel that would typically be gifted or loaned to Met Gala attendees.
The GOP-led panel even called those steps “significant attempts,” and
said it did not find evidence that Ocasio-Cortez “intentionally underpaid” for costs related to the event, and that “in many instances,” she had relied on a campaign staffer to handle discussions of payment and the advice of her counsel to determine the amounts.
Emphasis mine. Sounds like she tried to comply, made a mistake, and should be writing a couple of checks to make this right. Get back to me if she refuses.
Meanwhile, the GOP-led panel
“did not receive full cooperation from [GOP Representative Mike Kelly’s wife] Mrs. Kelly and was therefore unable to determine whether her stock purchase was improper.”
Also, Trump’s name is in the Epstein files and the GOP Speaker literally shut down the government rather than release them, so as the Sesame Street song goes, “one of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong.”
ilinamorato@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•This is the most panicked Republicans have been in years2·6 days agoEvery little bit helps. My dad changed his vote in 2016. My mom opted out in 2016 and changed her vote in 2020, and is now campaigning for Democrats. For that matter, I voted for Bush, McCain, and Romney before discovering how I’d been lied to and voting for Clinton, Biden, and Harris (and now I’m literally a democratic socialist). I know people who haven’t changed their vote, but who stopped campaigning for the GOP. I know people who are only voting in local races now.
The articles aren’t just hopium. The base is diminishing; it’s just not going as fast as we would like. Maybe the Epstein thing will finally do it.
Yes, because as everyone knows, you lose all your ability to make good parking decisions when you live in housing without attached parking.
“Ohhh nooo, I was going to park a block away and pay the meter, like I do literally every time I drive anywhere, but now I have to leave my car in the middle of the street! I can’t help myself!”
